A Playground of Reefs and Wrecks

When it comes to diving in the Gulf, there’s one thing you can always count on — variety. From shallow ledges just a few miles offshore to deep, mysterious wrecks resting on the sea floor. The Gulf is a vast underwater playground for divers of all levels. Each site holds its own story, and together they form a living museum beneath the waves.
Over the years, Florida’s Gulf Coast has become home to one of the most successful artificial reef programs in the world. What was once open sand has been transformed into a thriving marine oasis, thanks to the sinking of decommissioned ships, military tanks, concrete culverts, and even sections of old bridges. These structures now buzz with marine life — from schools of baitfish and snappers to vibrant corals and sponges — turning forgotten metal into living reefs.
Among the Gulf’s many gems, a few standout sites are local favorites. The RJ Thompson is a buoy tender that went down in a storm, and the Mexican Pride, a 200-foot freighter resting upright at about 120 feet, is draped in colorful soft corals and patrolled by curious barracuda and massive goliath groupers. The Circle of Heroes, is an underwater memorial dedicated to Veterans and first responders . It is located just 10 miles south of Tarpon Springs. It's 13 life-sized statues that honor U.S. service members and are now surrounded by flourishing marine life. And the Ghost Ship Reef, with its haunting silhouette and maze-like structure, offers a truly otherworldly dive experience — perfect for adventurous explorers and photographers alike.
